Do not guess a universal name format
If an app rejects your name or passport number, first identify the exact service and document type selected. A mismatch can come from a field rule, the account's earlier record or a verification step. The right correction depends on that provider. Do not shorten a name, change a digit, or select another person's identity just to get past the form.
A documented example: China Railway 12306
China Railway publishes specific foreign-passport name and number entry instructions. They say to use the passport's visual inspection zone as the main reference, with its machine-readable zone as an aid. The instructions cover name order, spaces, punctuation and the treatment of certain passport-number characters. Read the examples that match your passport instead of applying a generic transliteration rule. These are 12306 rules only.
If a 12306 entry is rejected, recheck it against the original passport and 12306's own entry rules. The State Council guide for foreign residents says foreign travelers can upload a passport image for manual verification or take a valid passport to a station ticket window. Ask 12306 which route fits an unusual name or an unresolved check. Check the displayed verification status and follow the current 12306 instructions for that status; an entered profile alone does not establish that verification passed.
A useful check before you try again
- Confirm that you selected foreign passport rather than another document category.
- Compare the app entry with the physical passport and the named provider's own entry rules. Pay attention to the location of spaces and characters, but follow the provider's examples.
- Check whether the issue is at data entry, identity review or an existing account record. Record the exact error without sharing your passport number in public.
- If it is 12306 and the online route still fails, use its stated image-review or station-window route. Bring the original document to the station if using the window.
For every other app, ask its operator
The 12306 pattern should not be copied into a bank, payment wallet or government app. Ask that provider which document types it accepts, how it stores names, how an existing record is corrected and which official support or physical counter handles a failed check. If you have a deadline or a planned journey, seek the official fallback early; repeated speculative entries may not solve an identity mismatch.
