The national working-and-living guide describes foreign-currency conversion at commercial-bank outlets, marked money changers and self-service currency-exchange machines, as well as RMB withdrawal with an international bank card at a supported ATM. An ATM withdrawal is a card transaction, not the same service as exchanging banknotes at a counter.
Before exchanging
- Find a bank or exchange location through its official published channel. For a non-bank outlet or machine, confirm that the location displays an exchange mark and ask the operator who runs it.
- Ask the provider whether it handles your currency and transaction type today. Confirm the identity and transaction documents it requires, the exchange rate, all fees and any applicable limits before agreeing.
- Check the amount of RMB you will receive and keep the provider’s transaction record.
The national guide names channel categories. It does not certify a particular street counter, publish its live rate or establish a universal document list for all conversions. Avoid an informal person-to-person exchange arranged through an unverified contact.
If a channel cannot help
Ask why the transaction cannot proceed and contact the bank or exchange operator through its official support route. If using an overseas card for an ATM withdrawal, confirm card-network support and issuer conditions; the machine’s inability to dispense cash does not establish the cause. Ask the relevant regulator or authorised provider about any rule they cite, rather than assuming every city has the same operational process.
