When you first arrive in China and stay in a hotel, the hotel reports that stay through its own accommodation-reporting route. That record belongs to the hotel stay. It does not carry over when you move into a rented apartment. A private, non-hotel address is treated as a different registration category and must be registered on its own.
Two registrations, not one continuation
The national immigration authority separates a hotel stay from a non-hotel residence. The hotel is responsible for reporting the hotel stay; the new non-hotel address needs a different route. Do not treat the hotel's previous record as proof for the rental. The two are distinct steps, and the first does not satisfy the second.
The move-in sequence
- Recognize that your hotel stay was handled under the hotel's accommodation registration, not under a private-address registration.
- Once you lease a non-hotel residence, treat the new address as a fresh registration requirement.
- Do not submit the hotel's earlier registration record as evidence for the rental address.
- Register the new non-hotel address within 24 hours after arrival through the NIA nationwide online route or with local public security.
- Keep the hotel record and the rental registration as separate documents.
When the normal route stalls
If the expected path does not complete, work from the responsibility split below rather than assuming the hotel step covers you:
- If the rental provider or agent says they cannot register the address, contact the local exit-entry administration yourself rather than relying on the hotel record.
- If a document requirement is unclear, ask the local authority which items they require for a non-hotel address; do not assume the hotel's documents are sufficient.
- If you are unsure whether your employer handles this, confirm separately, because employer assistance does not replace the registration itself.
- For navigation help on this site, the on-page web chat can point you to the right page, but it is not the registering authority.
Who is responsible for what
| Party | Role in registration |
|---|---|
| National authority (NIA) | Sets the nationwide rule that separates hotel stays from non-hotel residence registration. |
| City exit-entry administration | Operates the local route for a non-hotel address; local arrangements must be confirmed with them. |
| Hotel (provider of the first stay) | Reports the hotel stay only; its record does not cover the rental. |
| Landlord or rental agent | May support the new-address registration but does not substitute for the authority's process. |
| Employer | May help in practice, but that help does not replace the registration requirement. |
| You, the individual | Must ensure the non-hotel address is registered on its own and kept separate from the hotel record. |
What you must confirm with the authority
This article covers the separation principle from the national notice. The NIA states a national 24-hour period after arrival at a non-hotel address. This article does not give every local document list or city-specific assistance step. Before you rely on any detail, confirm with the local exit-entry administration:
- Which documents the city requires for a non-hotel address registration.
- Any city-specific procedure or location for submitting the registration.
- How to correct or verify the registration record for your actual rental address.
The nationwide notice and its official interpretation are the basis for the separation described here: see the NIA nationwide notice on accommodation registration and the NIA interpretation of the registration rule.
